Stone has a huge variation in texture and hardness. Marble carves like wood, whereas granite needs strong tools for it to be chipped away in broken shards. It is laborious work to create sculpture out of stone and nowadays machines are commonly used. I tend to carve sandstone to protect my arms and body from permanent damage...
